RNs must complete 12 contact hours of continuing education every year, including at least 2 contact hours in the subject of mental health conditions common to veterans and family members of veterans. Licensees authorized to prescribe, dispense, and/or administer controlled substances must also complete at least 3 contact hours of drug diversion training, best-practice prescribing of controlled substances training and training on prescribing and administration of an opioid antagonist at initial licensure, and at least 1 contact hour every renewal thereafter.

LPNs must complete 24 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years, including at least 3 contact hours in substance abuse and at least 2 contact hours in the subject of mental health conditions common to veterans and family members of veterans. A 1-time requirement of 2 contact hours in end-of-life care with pain management must also be completed for new licensees or at the time of reinstatement of a lapsed or inactive license.
